The Lightning Thief

Project type

Sound Design

Date

November 2023

Location

Virginia Rogers Theatre, Millikin University, Decatur, IL

My sound design of The Lightning Thief featured a d&b SoundScape processor which enabled a 360º surround sound system consisting of 22 loudspeakers spaced throughout the house. This included an in depth re-design of the sound system, including the building of 33 adapter cables to enable the in-house wiring to accommodate the additional needed speakers.

Positional based tracking was programmed for each actor via En-Snap to audibly hear the actors move as they moved on the stage. SoundScape was also used to align band members to their position on stage, and enable stereo sound to the front fill system.

The show was mixed on a DiGiCo SD9 with Theatre software, used Shure ULXD microphones over Dante, and a Waves SuperRack server for effects processing. QLab communicated via OSC to trigger cues in En-Snap.

All of the live vocals and instruments were recorded in multitrack which enabled virtual sound checks for the A1 to practice mixing, or to work design notes without performers in the room.
